When it comes to toys, there is one brand you know you can trust to be durable, ethical and great quality, and that is brio. We were recently given the opportunity to review the BRIO Safari Railway Set and with two little boys at home, I knew that it would go down a treat so didn’t hesitate in saying yes.
As with most preschoolers Riley and Harry have developed a bit of a thing for transport. It was inevitable really with a dad that’s a lorry driver, an uncle that’s a professional rallycross driver and a Grandad that’s a farmer. They love going for rides in the tractors, watching cars whizz round at the race tracks and looking for airplanes in the sky. But their favourite
Their favourite thing however has to be trains. They love going on the train, spotting trains, books about trains, Thomas the Tank Engine, and of course they love BRIO wooden train sets.
The BRIO Safari Railway Set is manufactured to BRIO’s high standards and is the perfect BRIO starter set for busy little hands. It’s a 15 piece set made from FSC Certified wood and includes: 7 x track pieces, 1 x safari ranger, 1 x train, 1 x load wagon, 1 x food load, 1 x wooden zebra, 1 x magnetic monkey, 1 x crossing point and 1 x tree.
The BRIO Safari Railyway Set provides children with the perfect opportunity to create their very own safari rail adventure, where they can help the ranger navigate the train around the track and spot the zebra out on the savannah or the cheeky monkey hanging in the trees. Talking of the monkey, if it is positioned in the tree it will steal the food load off the wagon trailer as it passes underneath the branches, adding a fun and educational element to the play.
The great news for parents is that all new BRIO products, including the BRIO Safari Railway Set, are designed with shapes and functions that can easily be used with previous models, so if you’ve got some old trains or pieces or track lying around at home they will work in perfect harmony with any new products you purchase from the range. Their wooden railways have always been a classic and the range holds an endless amount of tracks, trains and accessories that encourage children’s creativity. And besides being fun to play with, while building and re-building, children practice their logical thinking and motor skills too.
You can extend this particular set with the Brio Safari Crossing, featuring a hippo and crocodile on either side of the tracks whose jaws open and shut as the train passes, and the Brio Safari Train and Brio Giraffe and Wagon.

BRIO products aren’t the cheapest, but if you want the highest quality from the start, then BRIO is definitely your brand. Playing with their sets gives you a great appreciation for not just the quality of the trains, but also the brilliance of the designers behind the products and the realism of BRIO trains is unmatched by any other wooden train line. While BRIO does use a lot of plastic, particularly for the trains, it’s extremely high quality, heavy duty stuff and the end result is great. You can feel confident as a parent that the train sets are a worthwhile investment and won’t chip, break or fade in colour any time soon.
We just so happened to already have the BRIO Safari Train at home so the BRIO Safari Railway Set has been a welcome addition to the boys’ growing collection. They’ve had endless hours of fun with the new set already and both are fascinated by the fact the cheeky monkey can steal the food load off of the trailer wagon as it passes under the tree. It’s little details like this in the set’s design that really adds a fun and imaginative element to their playtime.
