Review // Hape Quadrillo Whirlpool Marble Run

I LOVE marbles and one of my earliest memories is of me sat on the floor by the Christmas tree playing with some as a toddler. I collected them throughout my childhood, which may seem strange to some but many of the individual marbles had their own stories and special meanings to me and I actually still have them today, tucked away safely in one of my memory boxes.

So when we were recently given the opportunity to review the Hape Quadrilla Whirlpool Marble Run, I didn’t hesitate in saying yes.

Hape toys are created to inspire play, learning and exploration of the world we live in. They are designed first and foremost for children, with each product carefully constructed to promote intuitive play and enhance a child’s developmental skills. Neither language, nor culture, nor gender impedes the intuitive play patterns. What children see as fun, parents recognise as age-appropriate learning tools. By using natural materials, water-based paints and strict quality control measures, Hape ensures that every toy is an ethical investment that children will love and parents can trust.

Hape Quadrilla is no different. It is a high quality wooden marble run construction system and having got to grips with it myself over the last couple of weeks, I can tell you now that it is A-MAZING. Honestly. They weren’t lying when they said it was suitable for 4 – 99 year olds…it definitely appeals to adults as well as children, providing endless hours of fun for the whole family.

As soon as I opened the box and saw the quality and craftsmanship that had gone into each piece, I was immediately impressed…and the contrast of natural and coloured wood made the set visually appealing to the eyes.

What’s in the box?

  • 50 marbles (in a bag)
  • 55 wooden pieces (19 x coloured blocks, 9 x accelerators, 5 x curved rails, 4 x hole covers, 17 x spacers, 1 x spiral)
  • Full instructions

There is no right or wrong way to construct the Hape Quadrillo Whirlpool so it provides endless creative building possibilities, as well as encouraging special thinking and problem solving.

Naturally the boys were very eager to get building their first creation, but are too young to do it alone so I did require some adult assembly. There are suggested designs to build in the instruction manual and i would recommend trying some of these first before you try and go it alone. Whirlpool takes twists and turns to new heights thanks to the large funnel, 5 curved rails and 9 power-boosting accelerators – it really encourage young builders to design gravity defying marble runs and it took us no time at all to complete our first structure. The boys literally played with it non-stop for the next few hours and were completely fascinated, having never played with or seen marbles before.

Even though the pieces do not snap together, they still fit together securely enough to be assembled on carpet.  However, i have found that the marble run is more stable on a flat, hard surface.  That being said, I cannot fault the durability, quality or craftsmanship of each piece.

All Quadrilla marble run sets are crafted with heirloom quality birch and rubber wood for long-lasting marble racing fun and as with all Hape toys, they have a non-toxic, child safe and high quality finish and are made using FSC accredited wood products.

What I love the most about the Hape Quadrilla Whirlpool Marble Run is its ability to stimulate children through every stage of development, helping to nurture and develop their natural abilities. Whether its improving concentration, developing logical thinking or encouraging problem solving – it’s guaranteed to provides hours of fun for all ages while teaching valuable skills at the same time.

It looks amazing! My eldest has a super basic marble run – it only has one way of being slotted together and it’s a fairly simple down hill slope. I’m sure he’d love something like this!

You sound so much like me, i can’t stand the plastic tat that is “toys” these days. I much prefer traditional wooden toys, you just can’t beat the quality of them xx

Exactly – you just can’t beat the quality of traditional wooden toys can you? xx

Guaranteed to keep them occupied for hours. Love toys like this. My kids are huge lego fans so this would be a perfect alternative.

Right?! I absolutely loved marbles as of a kid, of course we never had anything half as exciting as this but still, marbles are such a classic and i’m glad a love of them has passed on to the boys! xx

I must admit, i’ve totally been playing with it when the boys aren’t around. It takes me right back to my childhood, although we never had anything half as exciting as this lol xxx

Wooden toys are the best! And who doesn’t love a marble run! What a fab toy for kids to play with together. My toddler would love it but I’d have to wait till she’s older and I can trust her with marbles!!x
