Review // Schleich Giant Volcano

We were recently asked to review the new Schleich Giant Volcano playset. Designed to let the imagination soar, this playset with its own T-Rex, is packed full of clever features and can serve many play functions. I knew it would be a hit with the boys because they are obsessed with dinosaurs

What’s in the box?

1 x Giant volcano (Requires assembly. Comes in multiple pieces, including rocks, lava and foliage)

1 x T-Rex Dinosaur

1 x Stegosaurus Dinosaur

1 x Skeletal Stegosaurus (requires assembly)

1 x Frog

1 x Fish

1 x Instructions

The instructions are clear and easy enough to follow, but the pieces are fiddly and I found the Giant Volcano quite tricky and time-consuming to assemble. It took me a little over an hour to complete and I’m glad I chose to assemble on a hard surface because a carpet/rug would not have provided enough stability.

That aside, the Schleich Giant Volcano is an impressive playset with lots of hidden features. As with all Schleich toys, the quality of the products is second to none and the attention to detail is impeccable. This set isn’t made from a flimsy or poor quality plastic, it feels really heavy and strong and durable and something that will last for a very long time. At £99.99 it’s certainly not cheap, but it’s a worthwhile investment that could be passed down through the generations.

The volcano itself is an impressive size (28cm x 63cm x 58cm) and the finished effect is amazing. The rock surface is jagged and ridged like you would expect (without being sharp), the lava is bubbling and flowing, the tree trunk and roots are desolate and bare, the foliage is in keeping with the Cretaceous period…it’s just an all-round brilliant replica of a volcano with gorgeous detailing.

FUN FACT: Very many volcanos were active during the Cretaceous period. They hurled ashes into the air and spat out hot lava at temperatures ranging between 800 to 1200 degrees.

The Schleich Giant Volcano looks deceptively simple, but it isn’t, it has lots of hidden features that just add to the product’s playability.  For instance, there’s a mysterious skull at the top of the volcano that when pressed causes stalactites to drop down – Riley likes to pretend that this is some sort of defence mechanism that blocks the entrance and prevents intruders like the scary T-Rex from entering the secret dwelling.

Another great feature is the fossil puzzle. It’s made up of 5 rock pieces that are carefully placed into the side of the volcano to reveal a fossil. This has to be done by me currently as the boys are unable to do it themselves…but I have to be quick because Harry loves to stomp the T-Rex on to the trigger rock – at the base of the volcano – which dislodges the fossil and causes a rockfall.

There’s also a dinosaur trap over by the tree roots, which is meant for dinosaurs (clearly) but the boys think it’s funnier to catch eachother’s hands in the trap instead. It functions by pulling the two long tree roots apart and then pressing down on the central root which acts as a trigger and snaps shut the outer roots to trap the intruder. Or in our case…human hands! Which we all know wouldn’t have been around when the dinosaurs were but who am I to argue with a 3 and 4 year old.

Alongside the star of the show – the T-Rex, painted in a special new guise – are a Steogosarus and a snap-together Steogosaurus skeleton. The quality and detailing on all 3 of these items is fantastic and they look incredibly lifelike.

The Schleich Giant Volcano playset also comes with other exciting animals like reptiles and amphibians as well as a water hole with removeable water surface, various points around the set to insert plants and a row of stalegmites that can be placed in the larger entrance to the hidden cave area.

Overall Thoughts?

Schleich Giant Volcano

As I’ve mentioned at various points, the quality, durability and attention to detail on this playset is unquestionable. All of the items are painted and finished to an exceptionally high standard so it’s clear that a lot of thought and time has gone into the design process. The volcano itself is pretty weighty, it’s certainly not something my two could lift and carry around the house by themselves.

Schleich Giant Volcano

The Schleich Giant Volcano is so much more than just a playset. The included dinosaurs and other accessories, plus the range of hidden features takes this set to another dimension. It’s engaging, interactive, educational and opens up a whole world of imaginative play and role play. It’s a fantastic way to teach children about volcanoes, dinosaurs and prehistoric times as it allows them to fully immerse themselves in the topic at hand.

You can also expand the set with other products from the “Dinosaurs” range so the play and learning possibilities are truly endless.
