Disney and Pixar first introduced us to the high-speed action of Cars way back in 2006 and the franchise has gone on to become a firm favourite with children (and adults) around the world. Unsurprisingly, Riley and Harry are both HUGE fans of Cars and have been since they were old enough to consciously understand films, so they are super excited to go and watch the threequel “Cars 3” which hit our cinemas last month.
The Cars 3 Mack Die Cast Carrier from the Disney Store is a really cool deluxe set that features a talking Mack truck and eight die-cast vehicles from Cars 3, including Lightning McQueen, Mater, Sally, Sarge, Ramone, Flo, Luigi and Guido.
The Mack truck is an exact replica of his film counterpart with detailed moulding and moving wheels and you can press his hat to hear ten fun phrases and character sounds. There is an on/off switch under Mack’s cab and his large trailer features a carry handle, a removable side panel and 8 compartments to hold die-cast vehicles. The side panel can be quite tricky to attach to Mack’s trailer so young children may require help with this from an adult. The carry handle can also be fiddly for little fingers.
Mack’s trailer houses all eight of the die-cast vehicles included with the set and the vehicles range in size from 5-10cm. Each one features intricate character detail and moving wheels so they are perfect for roleplay and allow children to recreate some of their favourite scenes from the films.
Since the first Cars film, the hotshot star of Pixar’s animated franchise has had a red exterior, yellow lightning bolt and No.95 that are as synonymous with the racer as his “Ka-chow” catchphrase. However, the Lightning McQueen vehicle that’s included is a grey version and not the red one featured on the box or that kids may be familiar with. We were really confused by this at first but a quick Google led us to the understanding that it is in fact a clue to the Cars 3 storyline, where Mc Queen begins the film in a grey primer following a crash.
The die-cast vehicles are fun for standard transport play, imaginative/role play and racing. They can be played with together or separately and then stored inside Mack’s trailer for quick and easy clean up.
As I mentioned earlier in the post, we were challenged by the Disney Store to use the Mack Die Cast Carrier Set in our very own DIY race and that’s exactly what we did. I actually had some “road” tape lying around the house so I used this and a lever arch file (for some height) to build a race track for the boys. They had SO much fun and absolutely loved using Mack to transport all of the vehicles to the track sidelines and then off-loading them all near the start of the track reading for some serious racing.
We found the cars moved really easily on the tape itself and also on the laminated floor and they picked up great speed going down our self-made ramp.
