If you had a decent childhood, you probably crafted some Play-Doh masterpieces back in the day…I know I did…and that love affair with the modelling compound seems to have passed on to my own children as well.
Play-Doh has been a hit with the boys since they were toddlers and when we heard about the new Play-Doh Touch Shape To Life Studio we couldn’t wait to try it out.
Parents today are raising a generation of tech-savvy kids and Hasbro has taken a stab at making the Play-Doh brand relevant to them with its new Play-Doh Touch app. And, thanks to this fancy app, children can now bring their Play-Doh creations to life and play with them in a way they’ve never imagined before. What’s in the box?
- 10 x digital stampers
- 19 x cutters and tools
- 7 x tubs of Play-Doh (purple, red, orange, green, blue, white and black)
- 1 x studio base
SHAPE – Use the digital stampers, cutters and tools or shape your own creations.
You start your adventure by creating a character using the digital stampers. The digital stampers include 5 x character stampers (ghoul/monster, dinosaur, turtle, jellyfish and snail) which unlock unique personalities and worlds in the app and 5 x action stampers which sit around the edge of the studio base and affect creations in surprising ways in the app.
They are really easy to use you just use the roller tool provided to flatten the Play-Doh then press the stamper in quite firmly making sure to trim the edges with the cutter. You then carefully remove the creation from the stamper and place it on to the studio. You need to keep the outline of the character in tact so the app can recognise it but the stampers are pretty chunky so perfectly manageable for little hands.
SCAN – Use your tablet or smartphone to scan your creation into the app.
Firstly, you need to download the Play-Doh Touch app onto your device from the Apple App Store or Google Play. When you first launch the app, you’ll enter a mostly blank world where your soon-to-be-created main character will live. You’ll then see a virtual can of Play-Doh with a cloud hovering above it; you will need to tap on that before progressing further. This launches your camera, which will scan whatever masterpiece you’ve created and bring it into the app.
To bring your creation to life, you need to place it in the centre of the studio base and then use your tablet or smartphone to scan it into the Play-Doh Touch app. In my experience, this typically took about 10 seconds, including lining up the image and processing it, but it might take longer if you don’t have the right lighting or background.
EXPLORE – See your creation come to life in a virtual world!
You can add some action shapes to get your character to dance, float, spin, fly or multiply and use the cutters to enhance the background and add designs to the world around you.
Your initial creation is the first of dozens of components you can add to the environment. Each world has 5 character tubs (for adding new creatures) and 10 environment tubs. The latter let you add whimsical trees or cannons or waterfalls to the background, and these can even interact with your virtual friends.
You can create whole worlds of adventure with all of your creations in – it is brilliant.
What the Play-Doh Touch Shape To Life Studio provides, just as its modelling compound has done for decades now, is a way for children to be imaginative for hours on end. They can unleash their artistic side, watch their creations come to life and have lots of fun exploring virtual worlds.
Riley and Harry have absolutely loved whipping up crazy characters and both find the app really fun and easy to use.
