As a parent, I take an active role in the boys’ education and am always doing things with them at home to reinforce what they have been learning at school. We are HUGE fans of Twinkl and they are our go-to site for resources. They offer a huge range of educational resources for schools and parents to download, including display materials, storybook ideas, topic-based activities craft ideas and much more.
When I heard that Twinkl were releasing a brand-new range of books, I knew I had to give them a try. I was very kindly sent a copy of Ronald The Rhino, which is a Twinkl original and a sweet little story about friendship and self-discovery.
Ronald the Rhino is sad because he doesn’t feel as special as all the other animals. He wants to be just like them, but he doesn’t have spots like leopard and he can’t slither like snake either. Ronald is left feeling glum. That is, until, his forest friends help him to realise just how special he really is.
Rhyming stories are a firm favourite in our house and this one does not disappoint at all. It is a beautifully written story which reads out extremely well, in that very sing-song way that children have come to love and adore.
Every page features wonderful illustrations that capture your attention and help bring the story to life, but what makes this book truly special though is that it can be used in conjunction with the FREE Twinkl AR app to unlock augmented reality features.
Whenever you see a page with the AR app icon in the bottom right-hand corner, you simply aim your device at the page and then out jumps Ronald and his friends in 3D form. Like most children of their generation, Riley and Harry are experts with this kind of technology so I think it’s great that Twinkl has incorporated this feature into their books. It really brings the story to life and will captivate even the most reluctant of readers.
As you would expect from Twinkl, they have produced a wide range of online resources to accompany the story of Ronald the Rhino and I found plenty that were suitable for Harry, in reception, and Riley, in Year 1.
Children can retell the story using Ronald the Rhino Stick Puppets or Ronald the Rhino Role-Play Masks, practice their pencil skills with the Ronald the Rhino Pencil Control Activity Sheets , improve their phonics skills with this Ronald the Rhino Rhyme Matching Activity or have fun with the Ronald the Rhino Colouring Pages. There’s even counting sheets, word searches, sequencing cards, display posters, colour by numbers and more. You can view all of the Ronald the Rhino resources here.
Ronald the Rhino is a charming little story that will captivate the hearts and minds of children of all ages. Not only does it teach the value of friendship, but it also encourages children to have confidence in themselves and embrace their uniqueness.
If you’re looking for a new book to add to the bookshelves then I would highly recommend Ronald the Rhino. Hardcopies of the book are available through Twinkl’s Book Club (subscription service) or you can download the ebook here.
