There is something about the arrival of Autumn and the change in weather that makes me far happier to stay at home. The chill in the air, the darker mornings, the earlier evenings, the crunching leaves, the dew on the grass. It is by far my favourite time of year. Summer is lovely and everything, but is there anything nicer than getting all cosy on a winter’s day, lighting some candles and snuggling together in front of a warm fire? (No.)
Everyone’s been talking about hygge recently – pronounced “hoo-ga,” this Danish concept cannot be translated to one single word but encompasses a feeling of cosy contentment and well-being through enjoying the simple things in life. If you’ve ever enjoyed reading a book in front of the fire on a rainy Sunday or a cup of hot chocolate on a snow day you’ve experienced hygge without even knowing it.
I love this concept – it’s like a human version of hibernation. It encourages quiet time, togetherness, cosiness, home comforts and a slower pace of life – things i think we could all do with a little more of in our busy lives.
For me, hygge is a lazy day at home with the boys. Lighting some scented candles and letting the aroma fill the air. Feeling warmth from the log burner as we snuggle together on the sofa. Drinking hot cocoa with marshmallows and sprinkles. Watching a film together or reading a story in front of the fire. Lounging around in our pyjamas and fluffy bed socks. I’ve been known to spend all day in my pyjamas and I’m not afraid to admit it.
Pyjamas are one of my absolute favourite things in life – there’s something about getting into them after a crappy day that just instantly makes you feel better, isn’t there? It’s important to have the right kit though. I’m talking serious comfort and cosiness here. For you, that might be a satin nighty, but for me, it’s soft cotton pyjamas or loungewear.
I’m a curvy girl, so one of my favourite places to shop for nightwear is Simply Be because they have a gorgeous range of pyjamas, nightdresses, twosies, silk chemises, loungewear and robes available in sizes 12-32. They understand that every woman is unique, so there’s something to suit all shapes and sizes
Their exclusive AW17 nightwear collection features classic checks and graphic prints and comes in fleece and jersey finishes for the perfect cosy night in.
I love this Smiley World Loungewear Legging Set which features a soft pink jumper with Smiley motif to the front and super versatile black leggings to match. I have this set myself and have been really pleased with the fit and quality of it. The top itself is longline and long-sleeved which gives a really cosy feel to it and the leggings have a bit of stretch to them so there’s no restriction on movement and they don’t ride up your legs during the night either.
I also have the Smiley World Short-Sleeve Loungewear Set which features a printed cotton T-shirt and cuffed elastic-waist trousers and is my go-to outfit for lounging around the house during the day or night. I love the cute and playful design of the top and the fact that it’s carried through to the trousers with a few appliques here and there. Both the top and trousers are loose fitting, although the trousers do have cuffed bottoms which stops them from riding up.
Last up is this Minnie Mouse Fleece Twosie. Featuring a jumper and jogger set with my favourite Disney character -Minnie Mouse – printed throughout it is super soft, super fluffy and super comfy. It’s perfect for keeping warm and cosy on those cold winter nights.
Embracing hygge is different for everyone, but for me it is all about the lazy PJ days or getting home from a hectic day and changing into PJs. I’m shedding my worries and stresses of the day, making myself comfortable, getting cosy and enjoying the chance to rest and unwind for a few hours.
